I Want 1,000 Christmas Cards
The time of Christmas brings to mind many nouns, abstract and otherwise: joy to the world, angels, bells, holly, love, shepherds, silence, wise men, and Jesus. Another noun very vivid in our minds at such a freezing season, but hardly ever explicitly, is community: the companionship of others, preferably huddled round a fire in shelter from the snow. In the modern world, so hyper-connected and in many senses smaller than ever before, our community can, in fact, be spread out far beyond what it might have been in days gone by. It's not at all practical to invite all our friends over for Christmas lunch anymore, so to keep in touch, Christmas Cards are indispensable.
Christmas Cards were invented as recently as 1843. That may not sound recent, but consider it was only a little over 50 years before the airplane! Their inventor, Sir Henry Cole, must have quite desperately wanted to keep in touch with friends from around the country. He had been personally involved in helped bring about postal reforms in the UK, making it easier and cheaper than ever to mail letters. Having accomplished that, he went ahead and designed the first seasonally-themed greeting card, then made it available to the public for a pittance. The rest, as they say, is history.
Christmas Cards Link Us to Our World
Christmas Cards are an extraordinarily powerful way of keeping up friendships. You buy them, write whatever message you want inside, put them in an envelope, address the envelope, and send them off to old friends—old friends who live too far away to visit, old friends you haven't seen in years, old friends who still smile when they see what you've written to them. The church Jesus planted gives us strength through community; the reinforcement of friendship provided by Christmas Cards is much more powerful than you might believe.
Some Cards feature seasonal inspirational poems. "The Meaning of the Snowflake", written by Dayspring writer Holly Gerth, uses the beautiful crystals as metaphors for all facets of Jesus' love for us, much as the famous English carol, "The Holly and the Ivy", drew analogies from the qualities of holly. "God Sent Us a Saviour", by Roy Lessin, reminds us in powerful terms of just how great our need for Christ is—once again, keeping our eyes on the reason for the season.
Other Christmas Cards simply feature illustrations of snowy villages and other images associated with Christmastime. These range from famous paintings by Thomas Kinkade; themes and collections of winter cabins illuminated from the inside with glowing fires. Other cards are strictly cartoonish fun - cute polar bears, penguins, snowmen, and of course images of sheep, mangers, and children munching on candy canes.
What Is You Favorite Christmas Card?
You may be the praying grandma who loves to send the message of Christ to as many people as possible; there is no greater message than, "Jesus is the Reason for the Season" Are you the softie who can't resist the cute polar bears with their scarves flung around and over their shoulders? Maybe you're the person who just loves some good sing-song-ee poetry. Perhaps you're the guy or girl who takes advantage of this season to finally confess your true feelings of love and eternal devotion - all wrapped up in a glittery gold Christmas tree in the shape of a heart. Me, I love 'em all!
My mom is the grandma, if the card doesn't have a Bible verse and a picture of the manger, she puts it back. My daughter loves the bears, and bunnies, and penguins, especially if there is a Starbucks gift card inside! My sons love the ones with a short note from Dad, with the little pocket inside where he can slip a $20. My wife gets the gushy love and devotion card, and sometimes I write the sing-song-ee poetry myself. I know if it's good by whether or not I get that three-syllable "Awww..."
So this Christmas, send a couple bears, a few snowflakes, and plenty of Jesus in the Manger, because even if he could still lick the stamps himself Sir Henry Cole would agree it was Jesus Who caused all the commotion, we need to at least give Him credit!
Stay in touch with your brothers and sisters in Christ this Christmas - Order your Christmas Cards early! Special Early Christmas Savings are available for a limited time from Select Online Christian Retailers.
