How can I modify dark cherry finish to black, black/brown, or espresso?
I have a brand new solid wood furniture which is dark cherry finish. I'd like a darker finish like black, black/brown, or espresso. Is there a way to achieve this w/o any sandpapering? Thanks much for any answers.
If you want the wood grain to still be visible, you have no choice but to sand it down so you can re-stain it. Otherwise, the clear-coat finish will prevent the stain from penetrating into the wood.

Painting a baby crib?
I received a lovely crib, dresser and changing table that are in slightly used condition. I want to make the furniture look new, and also give it a new color since I'm not real wild about how light it is. Baby isn't due until September so I figure I have plenty of time.
The furniture is solid wood. Can someone explain to me how to go about re-painting it? I am looking to go from a really light to a cherry ish wood color. Also if you know any specific brands of stain or paint to use I'd appreciate it. Thanks all!
If there is still polyurethane on the furniture if its still shiny/waterproof) it will need to be stripped. Home Depot/Lowes has stripper that you paint on, let sit for 15 minutes and scape off. Its very easy, the stripper does all the work, but it does STINK. Very strong stuff, wouldnt recommend a pregnant woman stripping furniture.
If you are down to the bare wood, stain it. Minwax is the most common indoor stain and comes in a wide variety of colors. Its oil based so you may want to use disposable brushed to stain. There is a water based minwax stain (at home depot) that can be made in custom colors. I think the water based requires more work than the oil based because you must use the minwax conditioner first when putter water on wood. The stain takes about 3-4 hours to dry and recoat.
You cant refinsh furniture without applying the beautiful topcaot of polyurethane. Also made by Minwax, it comes in 3 sheens, gloss is most people's preference. It too takes about 3 hours, usually 2 coats. Apply this with a foam brush, it's cheap and recommended on the polyurethane can.
Okay, if you wish to paint it with Gripper primer. That stuff is great. it even sticks to glass and ceramic. As for paint...Use Berh paint! Its number one on consumer reports yet again. I recommend using a satin or semigloss sheen for furniture because they are more adhesive (so the paint wont scratch off).
